Numerous international actors, ranging from private individuals to international organizations have an interest in settling or helping to de-escalate intractable conflicts. The main argument i wish to advance is that of all these efforts, mediation offers the most promising approach to managing intractable conflicts.
Although major wars between sovereign states have become rare, contemporary world politics has been rife with internal conflict, ethnic cleansing, and violence against civilians. This book asks how, why, and when states and non-state actors use violence against one another, and examines the effectiveness of various forms of political violence.
The coronavirus pandemic has overturned many assumptions about the current world order. As a matter of urgency, it is time to revisit the principles of international security. In the pandemic, for the first time in living memory, humanity is confronting a common threat that it must defeat collectively. Most arguments currently revolve around the cost of that victory in terms of loss of life and economic damage.
Similarly, conflict, corruption or other problems might be understood as reflecting processes of change and development, and therefore be seen as coping mechanisms, depending on the context of the society concerned (cramer 2006). The universalist, mechanistic and reductionist approach to conflict/poverty policy intervention assumed that international intervention was the prerogative of leading western states; it also assumed that the subjects of intervention were non-western states and that.
The primary insight of my work is to overturn the notion, central to historical and political science scholarship for at least the last 70 years, that the international community has been working in the middle east to settle the conflict. On the contrary, the international community has been working to ensure that there is constant conflict so that preconceived notions and stories are affirmed.
This is precisely why it matters that we rethink conflict in how we teach history and in how we prepare students for dealing with the world around them. Throughout history and still today, conflict is the expression of big fault lines and the seed of big changes in our world.
